How is the winner “randomly” selected?

LSS Inc. wants the winner selection to be totally transparent and verifiable by anyone.  The following process has been adopted to ensure that this is the case.

  1. Sequential lottery numbers are assigned each time a LotteryScreenSaver computer reports usage to the server.

  2. The user is sent an email containing their lottery numbers when they are assigned

  3. A new sequence of lottery numbers will begin at midnight central time each Friday night.

  4. A pseudo random value between 0 and 1 will  be generated based on the closing value of the Dow Jones industrial average (as reported on the NYSE web site www.nyse.com  )

  5. The digits of the closing value are reversed and preceded by a decimal point to create a pseudo random decimal value.  For example,  if the closing value on a given Friday* is 10,343.23, the resulting value would be .3234301

  6. This random value is then multiplied by the total number of lottery numbers awarded to determine the winning lottery number.

  7. If for any reason the holder of that lottery number is ineligible, the holder of the next sequential lottery number that is eligible will be declared the winner.

  8. If there is a need to select 2 winners during a week the closing Dow Jones Average from the previous day (Thursday) will be utilized to select the second winner in a similar manner.

How will the winner be notified?

Lottery winners will be notified promptly after the drawing by email. In addition a letter will be written to the address provided during registration containing the prize or instructions for receiving their prize.  During the following week the winner will also be recognized semi-anonymously as a portion of the Screen Saver content.  For example “Jeff D. of Brentwood TN was last week’s winner. He won a trip for two to the 2010 Masters in Augusta Georgia courtesy of Nike’s Lottery Screen Saver”

How often are the prizes given out – are all prizes awarded?

Winners are selected and prizes awarded weekly.  Entries for each week end at midnight central time on  Friday night and winners are selected thereafter.   Because users provide contact information including email and postal addresses when they register to use the Lottery Screen Saver, it is anticipated that all prizes will be awarded. However, if for any reason a prize is not claimed within 90 days, an alternative winner will be selected in a subsequent week and the unclaimed prize will be given to them.  All prizes will eventually be awarded.
